Viscose: Properties & Sewing Tips | Fabric Guide

Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber made from regenerated cellulose extracted from wood fibers. Also known as rayon, it combines natural properties with the advantages of modern textile technology. Viscose captivates with its silky soft feel, elegant drape and excellent breathability. It is a popular alternative to silk and is used for airy summer clothing, flowing dresses and comfortable home textiles.

Properties of Viscose

  • Silky, supple feel with subtle sheen
  • Highly breathable and moisture-wicking – ideal for warm weather
  • Excellent, flowing drape for elegant silhouettes
  • Absorbs colors brilliantly and retains them long-lasting
  • Biodegradable and made from sustainable wood fibers

Uses for Viscose

Light summer dresses and flowing maxi dresses
Soft blouses, tunics and airy shirts
Comfortable bed linen and lightweight curtains
Sportswear and breathable activewear
Wrap skirts, wide pants and elegant scarves

Care Instructions

1 Hand wash in cold or lukewarm water (max. 30°C) with mild detergent
2 Do not wring – viscose loses up to 70% of its strength when wet
3 Dry flat on a towel or hang on padded hanger
4 Iron on reverse side at lowest setting (silk) while still slightly damp

Sewing Tips for Viscose

Always pre-wash: Viscose can shrink significantly! Be sure to pre-wash your fabric before cutting to avoid later disappointment. Use cold water and dry flat. The fabric feels stiff after washing but becomes soft again after ironing.

Microtex needle and rotary cutter: Use a new, fine Microtex needle (size 60/70) for woven viscose or a jersey needle for viscose jersey. The fabric is slippery – use a rotary cutter and pattern weights for cutting. Stabilize curves immediately after cutting with stay stitching to prevent stretching.

Use French seams: Viscose frays easily. French seams completely enclose the cut edges and provide a professional finish. Alternatively you can finish the edges with an overlocker. Sew at moderate speed to achieve an even seam appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Viscose

Is viscose the same as rayon?
Yes, the terms are often used synonymously. Viscose specifically refers to the process in which cellulose is treated with sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. Rayon is the umbrella term for regenerated cellulose fibers. In practice, both usually mean the same thing.
Can viscose be machine washed?
Only if the label allows it. Then use the delicate cycle with cold water and a mesh laundry bag to avoid damage. Viscose is very delicate when wet and can easily tear or distort. Hand washing is always the safest method.
Why does viscose feel stiff after washing?
Viscose naturally becomes stiff when wet, but returns to its soft texture after drying and ironing. This is completely normal and no cause for concern. Iron the fabric while still slightly damp and it will become nice and supple again.
